You’re right Meegan, we get and give far too much. With my family (siblings and parents etc) we draw a name from a hat and buy for that person with a pre-set amount and that’s it. The adult couples then pool a small amount of money to share between the nieces and nephews and buy something for only the amount divided by the number of children. Then we buy for our own children and that’s it. I don’t buy presents for friends because I would end up buying some token thing no one really needs and usually becomes rubbish or is re-gifted. I like to think they know I’m always thinking of them.
Every second year my family (siblings and parents) all spend that year with families of partners. On that year we donate whatever money we would have spent on a gift to a charity and we do not exchange gifts.
We are always buying our children “stuff” and my kids certainly have way more than they need. Good on you for taking on this challenge.
