Seven things

Marc and I have become hooked on a new blog.  It’s all about decluttering, moving on, sorting stuff out and letting go of material possessions.  Last night I was so intrigued, I started reading the blog from the very beginning, with Marc doing some sneaky over-the-shoulder reading along the way (while watching ‘My Super Ex-girlfriend’ – funny movie.  Think I’ll look for the sound track to it.  Good no brainer to keep you entertained while doing other things type of a movie).

I am now motivated to attempt this task as well.  So this morning Marc and I have started organising some more things to put on ebay that we have been meaning to do for a few weeks now.

For us, seven things a week to give away, sell, donate to charity or as a last resort to throw away, should be attainable and maintainable :)

I’m going to keep a tally and blog about it on a weekly basis.  This will help us to get rid of things that we are particularly attached to for whatever reason, and then we will have a blog record of the thing that’s gone from our lives, and a permanent memory of why it was held on to in the first place.

Hey Meegan. This post makes me so happy! (and thanks for your email too). Some weeks I wonder if I’m doing a really ridiculous thing, documenting my struggle with stuff online for all the world to see, and thinking it must be incredibly boring. It really helps to know that it has motivated others to try to do the same thing. This was just the encouragement I needed! :)

Nice work Meegs. It’s funny the reason that you hang on to things sometimes. Then when you finally do get rid of them, you often feel a whole lot better. We’ve been going through that a lot given that we moved from a huge place to a tiny place – but now we’re much better off!

Don’t forget about freecycle when getting rid of stuff. It’s fantastic as long as you get the right people. They come and collect it from your home so you don’t need to lift a finger.

I recommend opening a hotmail or yahoo account dedicated to just this when you sign up otherwise you will have millions of emails in your inbox.

People will take the most ridiculous things that you thought no one would ever want.

Hey Meegs,
I think I threw away 7 KILOS of cr@p this morning. I tried limiting myself to 7 things but couldn’t see a difference. The A-type personality in me had no off switch once I started!! Charli got into the swing of things and nearly threw my mobile phone out. Had to watch her!! :)

I am looking forward to reading about what you get rid of lol. Your house always looks so nice from the pictures I have seen. I need to de-clutter some places. I did good when we moved from England to here. I really got rid of so much stuff. It was hard but I don’t miss it.

Is that a picture of you at the top of your blog? You are so pretty!!!

Take care xx

Wow! We haven’t had so many comments in what seems like ages :)
Ok, here are my responses:

Gerrod – I’m going to try and be even more ruthless than normal. Each time we move (yes, which is often!) I try and throw out as much asI can too.

Michelle – I hadn’t even thought of freecycle, thanks for that!

Carla – go you good thing go! I was on a roll on Sunday too and wanted to get rid of heaps of things, but then I thought if I get rid of heaps all at once I won’t have anything left for my seven each week!

Catherine – us?! Neat?! NEVER!!!! And that’s a picture of my Little Sister up there. We do look very much alike though… I’ll pass on the compliment :)
