Bathurst Day

If you don’t care about sport please don’t bother reading this post.

The annual day of nothing but motor racing happened again today (despite having to show the Suzuki to a few potential buyers that meant I missed the first couple of hours).

To say it was eventful is probably the understatement of the year. With the tribute to Brocky (who died last month in a Targa rally), the huge accident in the support series from friday (which claimed the life of development series driver Mark Porter) and then 11 safety car incidents during the race there was lucky to be 17 cars finish at the end.

While there was many great overtaking moves and plenty of close racing it is so easily overshadowed by the heavy collisions that make you sit there hoping that the driver is able to get out of the car and walk away. When they have to cut the roof out of a car to free Paul Radisich, who was then taken by Care Flight to hospital in a serious but stable condition you have to hold your breath.

The highlight of the day was that Lowndes was able to win. As probably the driver that was most upset by the loss of Brock it was great to see him on the podium accepting the King of the Mountain trophy.

The highlight for all the girls was that Grant Denyer not only finished the race but was competitive throughout the race.

It gets said every year that Bathurst is a different race to any other and it was proven again today with many of the competitive teams failing by the wayside. Judging by the winners this year the only safe comment about Bathurst is that to win the race you must have a straight car.

Hi marc!! me? I was disappointed Holden didn’t win but did like the fact that one of Brocky’s protege’s won the day… what a bittersweet victory for Lowndes huh? Awesome day though this year I did not have the luxury of lounging in front of the telly watching all 161 laps – maybe next year!! :)
